As soon as I came across this intriguing piece of news, I remembered the Hollywood flick named ‘What Women Want’, starring Mel Gibson as the main lead. In this movie, Gibson had this power developed somehow, after an accident, that he could read the thoughts of women easily as he confronted them. I guess this time the doctor in Japan by plastic surgeon Dr. Kotaro Yoshimura, the Cell-Assisted Lipotransfer (CAL) has got a hint of it, what women actually want into current times. This time this technique developed is totally natural and no implants affair to be carried on.

The Japanese scientists have successfully developed a treatment for breast augmentation using stem cells and fat obtained from the patient’s own body, mainly thighs and stomach.

The technique is performed by sucking out fat from the abdomen or thigh and then injecting the fat together with stem cells back into the breast. What then generally occurs is that the stem cells nourish the fat cells to grow its own blood supply, which leads to the fat becoming a part of the breast.

This adds up to the various advantages related to this treatment undergone. Since these days 99 per cent of patients of breast augmentations (annually 250,000 in US, 1 million in the world) are being performed with artificial implants, this treatment does is not opposed by the body as the artificial implants are. However, 50,000 patients get their implants removed every year in the US due to developed complications. The fat grows inside and becomes a part of the breast mass. Some of the cells produce more fat and other cells change into a living blood supply for new breast tissue that grows into the treated breast. This treatment does not involves any cleave or incisions, as only small needle punctures are needed to be made on each breast making it almost unnoticeable. Furthermore, this reduces chances of risks associated with implants including deflation and leakage, capsular contracture (hardness and deformity), autoimmune disease (neurological problems), infection (skin redness and fever), and displacement (asymmetry and dislocation). Because the patient uses one’s own stem cells and fat, the CAL technique carries no risk of the tissue being rejected by the body.

This technique has already gained the approval by European Union and Britain; stem cell-assisted breast enhancement may soon become a reality in the United States too.
