Today is April Fools’ Day and is really enjoyed by people by playing practical jokes on friends and relatives to enjoy and make merry. However, while making this day with a different taste involves many other ingredients. And, where did those ingredients come from. I mean, while celebrating April Fool’s Day, playing pranks on people nobody has ever thought of that, that how did this day actually evolve?
Well, the actual facts are not definite but there are many theories regarding the occurrence of this day. The most probable one is that, that it is believed to be started around 1582 in France with the revision of the Gregorian calendar during the reign of Charles IX. The Gregorian calendar was practiced and New Year was moved from March 25th to April 1st to January 1st.
Since during those days information carriers were limited and many people still wanted to follow the old system of dates, they being rebellious refrained from using or practicing the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1 as the New Year Day. Scottish people adopted the new calendar in 1660, Germans, Danish and Norwegians in 1700 and English in 1752.
Since those many people resisted the change and continued with the same date system they were termed as fools and labeled as people to be played pranks on. The victims were also called ‘Poisson d’avril or ‘April Fish’ as the naïve fish gets caught easily and children would often tag with a fish’s picture on someone’s back.
This very day was celebrated in England and in the American colonies. Gradually it evolved and spread on to the other countries and the world, to trick each other and have fun. Even, today people play pranks and mock at each other on this day in the memory of those tradition-obsessed fools.
